Meet Brunswick in Real Life

Tucked within one of Melbourne’s most creative inner-city suburbs, this Brunswick Work & Play Shed reimagines compact urban living through a simple architectural form. This project combines workspace & retreat into a highly efficient footprint that feels far larger than its size suggests.

Wrapped in a striking charred timber exterior, the gable form sits comfortably within Brunswick’s industrial and creative character, drawing inspiration from the area’s rich warehouse and maker culture. Brunswick is renowned for its blend of industrial heritage, arts community, and contemporary urban lifestyle, making it the ideal setting for a project that blurs the line between work and home.

Inside, a warm and calming palette contrasts the bold exterior. Soft natural light fills the double-height living space, while carefully positioned windows frame views to the garden and create a strong connection between indoors and out. The sculptural staircase becomes a central architectural feature, adding visual interest while maximising the efficiency of the compact floor plan.

Designed as a true work-and-play environment, the space supports modern flexible living whether used as a creative studio, home office, guest retreat, or compact residence. Every square metre has been thoughtfully considered to deliver comfort, functionality, and architectural character without excess.

The landscaped courtyard extends the living experience outdoors, creating a private sanctuary within a dense urban setting. A circular plunge pool, stepping stone pathway, and lush planting soften the architectural form and reinforce the project's retreat-like atmosphere.

This unique Brunswick build demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can transform a modest footprint into an inspiring place to live, create, and unwind.
